HOw to register

Classes will run in May-June of 2019.

There is no application process for this program: all students are welcome to register. Details on how to register are found below. 

Dates:

 (YDD 1901)  |    (YDD 1902)

Classes take place Monday to Thursday from 9:30 am to 11:30 am (ending at 12:30 afternoon on May 2 and 3 only) with one culture class per week on Thursday from 1:30-3:30 pm. Attendance to all classes is mandatory for successful completion of the course.

Classes will be taught in an immersive environment in Yiddish, with basic course materials available in both English and French to meet the needs of the students in the class. 

Fees for Canadian residents/citizens: the cost of 6 undergraduate units (credits) at the University of Ottawa, or $1,770.88 CAD for six weeks of classes, including special enrichment programming and six university units (credits). These are the regular fees for six units (credits) at the University of Ottawa. 

Fees for non-Canadian residents/citizens: the cost of 6 undergraduate units (credits) at the University of Ottawa, or $6,197.20 CAD for six weeks of classes, including special enrichment programming and six university units (credits). These are the regular fees for six units (credits) at the University of Ottawa for non-Canadian residents/citizens.  

Registering for half of the program:

Any student may take just the first half of the course (YDD 1901, 3 credits in 3 weeks). 

Students wishing to take just the second half of the course (YDD 1902) may do so only with an equivalent to YDD 1901 (a first semester of beginner Yiddish from another university).

The fees for half of the program is 3 University of Ottawa units (credits) or $885.44 for Canadian students, $3098.60 for international students.

Students from the University of Ottawa can register by:

  1. Going to uoZone (your students’ portal) to register for the courses: YDD 1901 and YDD 1902. Registration will be open on April 6, 2017. Registration will remain open until the first week of classes.
  2. Completing and submitting the student information sheet found here, to be downloaded, filled in and returned via e-mail to the course instructor, Prof. Rebecca Margolis at rmargoli@uOttawa.ca.
  3. Because the course is so intensive, it is strongly recommended that all students learn the Yiddish alphabet before the first day of class by using the materials provided in the following website: http://www.yiddishbookcenter.org/language-literature-culture/learn-yiddish-alphabet

Undergraduate students from outside of the University of Ottawa can register by:

  1. Obtaining a letter of permission from your home university allowing you to take the course, and e-mail it to the University of Ottawa’s Undergraduate Office: arts@uOttawa.ca. The Undergraduate Office will create your access to the University’s registration portral (uoZone). For more information or to follow up, you can e-mail arts@uOttawa.ca or call 613-562-5134.
  2. Going to uoZone (your students’ portral) to register for the courses: YDD 1901 and YDD 1902. Registration will be open on April 20, 2017. Registration will remain open until the first week of classes in May.

Students not currently registered at a university or graduate students from outside of the University of Ottawacan register by:

Registering as Special student: http://www.uottawa.ca/undergraduate-course-registration/special-students and complete the process under the section “Registration Steps.” The Undergraduate Office will create your access to the University’s registration portral (uoZone). For more information or to follow up, you can e-mail arts@uOttawa.ca or call 613-562-5134.
  2. Going to uoZone (your students’ portal) to register for the courses: YDD 1901 and YDD 1902. Registration will be open on April 20, 2017. Registration will remain open until the first week of classes in May.

  1. Students coming from outside of Canada will be responsible for obtaining any visas required to study at the University of Ottawa. 
  2. Students from outside of Ottawa are responsible for making their own travel and housing arrangements. Student housing is available on campus at additional cost.
